Early Edith Heath Pottery of California
Heavy 8.5" 6-slot Ashtray w/ Vellum Sand Glaze
Heath Coupe Line, American Modern Design

Please, note the flaw in the cigarette well

This fissure was created while they were perfecting the "safety notch"

Early Mark before Trademarked c 1949
- beautiful dark clay - visible on base rim
- edges were not wiped of glaze.
- light gloss to the glaze - not a high-shine.
- this glaze is sometimes called "Shining Sand"
- glaze was discontinued in 1951.
- 6 slots are situated on one side.
- slots may vary slightly in depth & shape.
- slots are lightly rounded out at their peak.
- 1940s deeply carved stylized Heath mark.
- possibly crafted while Brian Heath was working out the safety-notch.
- made before the notch came to a more decisive pointed V shape.
- heavier build then Heath Pieces made after 1951.
